Red Flags (Part Two)

Red Flags. Once you crack the code, the code keeps returning.

In 2009 when you and a friend visited a mutual friend to discuss your website, and the look of contempt on his face at her suggestion that you design a coffee table book to showcase your photography.

In 1992, the dinner in Kloof Street, in the City Bowl, during which two men discussed how women smell of corpses, the one referring to a former wife, the other nodding sadly: ”I know the smell well.”

And you?

(thought bubble)

How can I remove myself without offending anybody?

Folks, if there’s one thing I need to remind myself of?

Training. Indoctrination. Conditioning. Mine.

Twelve years of Christian National Education.

Twelve years at the Dutch Reformed Church.

A lifetime of patriarchal teachings.

  • Keep the peace.
  • Smile, be polite.
  • Defer to men.

Regardless of how crass, misogynistic, rude, insulting.

Smile. Numb. Tune out.

Peeps it *is* an awakening. The entire globe is in disarray.

Sometimes we need to get under the skin of the disease.

If it takes murder to be filmed for social media?

If it takes millions of people to stand together?

If it takes painstakingly deconstructing the illness?

It’s time. Do what *you* know is *yours* to do.
